Hi Grannie. The should be 3 inches apart so yes, the cable will be 1.5 in from the side of the box. The most efficient way to use them is with a thermostat as they only turn on when the temp falls below the required level. The length of the cable doesn't effect the power used so if you are building a single bench I would use one cable. I am not sure how much each cable costs to run but we have 6no. 8x4foot benches (a lot of cable) and it costs us about €200 a year for very extensive growing.
