Good morning Christopher
In my experience the liner doesn't really add anything to the length of life of the beds and you are right it does give the slugs and snails a winter home. The only real reason for the liner is if you are putting the beds on a patio etc to stop the soil leaking out on to the patio along with the water that passes through it. We have a range of beds that comes with capping around the top. It is called the Castleton range however we don't sell the capping on its own
Regards
