Hi Catriona. It is OK to leave on top. The 2 most common problems with brassicas are cabbage root fly and cabbage white butterfly caterpillars. Root fly is really only a major problem when the plants are small as larger plants generally grow through the problem (there loose a few roots but have enough of a root ball to keep growing). Lying there mesh directly on plants will solve the root fly problem but if you want to net against cabbage white later on you will need to build a structure to hold net and join 2 lengths together (a stapler is handy for this).
