It takes time to get used to the mix you are adding but it sounds like you had the mix perfect and then added to much wet material instead of brown material. I wouldn't worry about the balls forming this is just moisture trapped in balls of compost keeping them together. You can break these up once you empty the contents and it is ready for spreading in your garden
