Hi Martha
I have a family of 4 as well. Mainly vegetarian (well 3 of us) and with what comes out of our kitchen and the garden we really needed the JK270 and value for money it is much better as the extra space is needed. Be careful to not put just food waste in it as it needs carbon (cardboard, newspaper or wood pellets) and grass to get the heat going. If you buy one we will send you on the user manual as well
