...t is this normal?

Also, should I empty the compost into a wheelbarrow and simply use a space to break the balls down before using it?

Hi Brian

Yes. This can be caused by Wood pellets breaking down and creating compost on the outside and a dry patch in the centre or the same can happen with paper or cardboard. Anyway it is fine and the compost can be used. Yes best to take it out of the composter and just break up the balls with a trowel and spread on your garden. All good for the garden
