You could say that however it has a built in thermometer and comes with instructions and a compost starter pack along with a hatch in the base for removing the compost and a prong for mixing the compost. They are very effective composters and undoubtably one of the best composters on the market. It has won all sorts of awards in the last 2 years including at Chelsea. But yes it is a Styrafoam box
