Hi Marian. The Hotbin is made from a moulded foam, it is like a more dense version of expanded polystyrene packaging. I cannot guarantee rats would not attempt to gnaw through the foam but I would suggest it would be unlikely. If vermin are a problem in your garden a better option may be the Joraform compost bins which are raised off the ground and are made from galvanized steel panels. I would happily guarantee rats could not penetrate the Joraform bin.
