The bulking agent creates air pockets within the contents of the unit and allows it to stay aerobic whilst the paper or cardboard helps to rebalance the internal moisture content of the unit. Due to the soft compressible nature of shredded paper and cardboard, it will not be able to create the air pockets and if used as a bulking agent will likely allow the HOTBIN’s contents to turn anaerobic after a couple of months of use. For this reason, wood shavings and sawdust cannot not be used as a form of bulking agent.
For those users who wish to source a form of bulking agent, ordinary wood chips can be used or a homemade version using shredded or chopped woody material from the garden can be created.
