Hi, would you need to join these (screws or nails or something) or are they heavy enough to just be placed on top of each other?

They don't need to be fixed together as you are right the weight of each one will hold it in place comfortably. If you were putting them in to the side of a very steep hill or something it might help to fix them with a standard metal fixing bracket but the slope would need to be quite severe to even think about doing this
