...whether the fish would be protected enough in the Winter. The pond would probably sit on the patio. Thanks for your help.

Hi Nick
The reason for a pond as deep as 44 inches is so that the fish can go deep in the winter which they will tend to do. Even in the coldest of winters only the top couple of millimetres will freeze so it won't be an issue. And the water won't freeze in from the sides if that is your concern
