Hi Michelle
Straw is great however peat or general compost also works really well. Leaving it outside in our climate is perfectly fine however i tend to take mine in during the cold spells during the winter when the temperatures get down to below minus 2/3 at night. If you leave it out when it is to cold the worms will self regulate and reduce their population accordingly which reduces the winter effectiveness of the hungry bin
