The worms will tend to follow the fresher the compost and food (kitchen waste etc) that you have added so if you turn the compost and use the older stuff there will be very few worms in that. That said if you do transfer some to the general garden the population left will produce more as they self regulate themselves. Particularly coming in to the Spring with temperatures rising
